Mental Health Advisory Council

The Mental Health Advisory Council is an advisory group appointed by and reporting to the WRHA Regional Adult Mental Health Team.  The Council is an opportunity for individuals with lived experience, family members, and other interested individuals to provide input regarding mental health service planning, implementation, and evaluation.  Volunteer members dialogue on a broad range of health and human service issues that impact the lives of people with mental illness and their support networks. There are 8 to 16 members on the Council. A minimum of 60% of the Council will be people with lived experience of mental health services.

Issues that the MHAC explores

The Mental Health Advisory Council explores topics that the Mental Health Program Team needs input on and that MHAC members and applicants feel are important. In the past, the Council has explored the following issues:

  • Family Participation and Natural Support
  • Stigma of Mental Illness and Mental Health Literacy
  • Crisis Response System Redevelopment
  • Recovery-oriented Mental Health System
  • Effective Transitions Between Acute Care and Community-based Services
  • Suicide Prevention
  • Housing
  • Mental Health Promotion in Schools

We Need Community People

We are looking for individuals who have a personal passion for and commitment to ongoing improvements to the mental health system and the quality of life of those living with mental illness.

What kind of time commitment is required?

Council members volunteer for terms of 3 years. The Council will meet 6-8 times per year.

How can you get involved?

All applicants will be invited to participate in an interview process that will take place in May/June each year. Terms begin in September each year.
