New hours of operation at Misericordia Urgent Care

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority today announced new hours of operation for the Misericordia Urgent Care Centre (MUCC), beginning July 5, 2017.  New patients will be accepted seven days per week between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Between the hours of 8 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. a physician and a nurse will remain on site to complete the care for those already in the centre, respond to emergency situations that might arise at the Misericordia Health Centre and to ensure the safe and timely transportation to an acute care centre of anyone who might present with significant care needs.

"We see low patient volumes at Misericordia Urgent Care Centre in the overnight hours. Those volumes drop throughout the night to an average of one patient per hour between midnight and 6 a.m.," said Dr. Brock Wright, WRHA vice president of clinical services and chief medical officer.

"Since the announcement in April of changes coming to Misericordia Urgent Care Centre later this fall, the number of patients presenting to the Misericordia Urgent Care Centre has decreased - in the first four weeks by as much as 12 per cent. What this says to us is that people are already taking steps to seek non-urgent care in other settings, and the region’s hospitals are ready and able to accommodate any increased volume this change may cause."

Wright cited low overnight patient volumes, the anticipated impact of summer vacations on staff resources and staff movement as individuals seek new opportunities elsewhere as factors that contributed to the new hours.  Staff who would normally work overnight in the MUCC will be offered shifts during the day and evening, which will help ensure coverage over the summer months, he added.

"The Misericordia Urgent Care Centre sees very few acute patients overnight per year, a volume that can be readily absorbed by Health Sciences Centre or St. Boniface Hospital," said Wright. "The public is encouraged to understand their options for care and the indicators of what is urgent versus what is an emergency when they decide where to go."

The Misericordia Urgent Care Centre is slated to be converted to a community-based intravenous clinic on October 3, 2017.
