New management structure announced

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority announced its new structure this week, reflecting community and hospital care in a single structure with six Vice-Presidents, three of whom are new. Through the reorganization, nine positions were eliminated and six people were re-appointed to new positions. This has been a difficult transition for the Authority, said Dr. Brian Postl, CEO. But ultimately this reorganization will more closely match the way we intend to deliver health care, based on the needs of people, regardless of whether they are in a hospital, their homes, a clinic or a personal care home.

Joining the authority are:

Dr. Brock J. Wright as Vice-President and Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Wright has been Vice-President and CMO at the Health Sciences Centre since 1997. Prior to this position, he was Head of the Department of Community Health Sciences at HSC. Dr. Wright has a BSc from the University of Winnipeg and an MD from the University of Manitoba. He has a Fellowship in Community Medicine and a Masters in Business Administration. He has an appointment in the Faculty of Medicine in the Department of Community Health Sciences. Over the years, Dr. Wright has led numerous hospital, regional and provincial initiatives.

Milton Sussman as Vice-President Allied Health, Services to Seniors and Long Term Care. Mr. Sussman's extensive knowledge of community services over 25 years in Winnipeg will be an asset in his role. Since 1987, Mr. Sussman has been the Managing Director of Ten Ten Sinclair Housing, where he managed the provision of a transitional housing program for people with physical disabilities to learn the skills necessary to live independently. He was also responsible for the management of six community-based independent living options offering shared supports services. Mr. Sussman obtained his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Winnipeg. He most recently served as a member of the health transition team of the Government of Manitoba.

Dr. Sharon Macdonald, Vice-President, Community Care - Dr. Macdonald graduated from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine in 1972. She completed her Fellowship in Community Medicine in 1982. Dr. Macdonald worked for the Ministry of Health, Province of Manitoba and was Assistant Deputy Minister of Community Health Services from 1985 to 1989. In 1990, Dr. Macdonald returned to the University of Manitoba and was subsequently appointed Director, J. A. Hildes Northern Medical Unit, Associate Professor and Chair of the Faculty of Medicine Research Ethics Board.

Jan Currie is now Vice-President and Chief Nursing Officer for the Authority. Jan has been with the WHA since its inception and holds a degree in Nursing and a Masters in Health Care Administration. As a result of the amalgamation of the Winnipeg Community and Long Term Care Authority (WCA) and the Winnipeg Hospital Authority (WHA), the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority was formed on December 1st, 1999.

The amalgamation was designed to eliminate duplication, reduce the number of vice-presidents and re-direct $800,000 in administrative costs to patient care.
