Community kitchens

Winnipeg Health Region
Published Monday May 1, 2000

Four years ago there were only five community kitchens in the city of Winnipeg. Today there are over 20 that provide low-income families with information about nutrition, growing food, and food budgeting while fostering a sense of community.

On Wednesday, May 3 a one-day workshop will be held to train people on how to operate their own community kitchen. These community kitchens are set up in churches, family resource centers and schools to help individuals and families cook, buy and grow food on a limited budget.

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, in partnership with several community agencies (Youville Centre, Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre, Child and Family Services, City of Winnipeg, The International Centre, Flora House), will be holding the workshop at Freight House, 200 Isabel Ave., door #5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The workshop is sponsored by Share Our Strengh, with honorary chairperson Bill Norrie and elder Velma Oris opening the day at 8:45 a.m.
