Transcona Health Office Moves

Staff at the Transcona Health Office have moved into their new site at 400A-1615 Regent Avenue W.

"The new site has the much-needed space to accommodate the growing office which provides Home Care, Public Health and other community services to the Transcona and Elmwood neighborhoods," says Dr. Sharon Macdonald, Vice President, Community Care. "The move is considered temporary, as we expect that a Health Access Centre will be developed in the area over the next few years, offering a more comprehensive set of services."

As part of the planning process around the Health Access Centre model, community groups in Transcona have been meeting and will continue to meet to be discuss their ideas/visions for the new Centre, including defining the site.

The Health Authority has been in discussions with Mr. John Buhler, with regard to his generous offer of support. Mr. Buhler offered to rent the former Tru Value store in Transcona to the Health Authority at a reduced rent, until the new Health Access Centre can be built. In addition, he offered to donate $500,000 towards the construction of a new Centre if the Health Authority rented the Tru Value space now, and later built the new Centre on his property.

"Unfortunately, there are three reasons why we can't make those commitments to Mr. Buhler at this time," added Macdonald. "First, according to an architect's review, renovations to the Tru-value space to make it equivalent to the site on Regent would cost almost $400,000, making the cost to rent similar at both sites.

"Second, it is questionable that we would be able to sublet the space we now have, without having to pay for another set of renovations to adapt it to a new tenant.

"Finally, we cannot commit to a time frame for the new Health Access Centre without formal approval from Manitoba Health. While we have approval to proceed with planning, we cannot commit to the development of a site until funding is secured through the Provincial Budget process, which is annual.

"We are certainly open to continuing discussions with Mr. Buhler, as we appreciate his, and any independent support of the development of health services in our neighborhoods."

An open house will be held at the new location on March 29th, 2001 from 2:00 to 4:30 pm. Members of the public and health care providers are welcome to attend.
