Toronto Calls on Winnipeg for Help with SARS

Health Care Volunteers Sought

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority has received a request from Toronto's Sunnybrook and Women's Hospital for health care professionals to help them cope with that city's SARS outbreak. This is the latest in a series of calls for assistance.

Many of Toronto's health care facilities have been associated with the outbreak and all have been affected by it. Their ability to maintain staffing levels is severely compromised. The WRHA is asking Manitoba health care professionals who are willing to volunteer to work in Toronto to call HealthLinks (788-8200) or fax (779-5645) and provide their contact information, background, availability and registration number. They will then be contacted with more details.

All medical personnel from Manitoba would be assigned to facilities where SARS isn't known to be present. Details (remuneration, length of stay, accommodation) are still being finalized.

As of May 29, 2003, Health Canada has received reports of 366 probable or suspect cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome in Canada. There have been 29 deaths in this country. To date, transmission has been limited to specific transmission settings such as households, hospitals and specific community settings.
