Koshul Report Released

A nation-wide recruitment process for a leader for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority's new cardiac sciences program will be launched immediately, WRHA President and CEO Dr. Brian Postl said today.

Postl, who earlier today was appointed by Health Minister Dave Chomiak to head up the Koshal Report implementation team, said the preliminary work for the recruitment process has already begun.

"Dr. Koshal made it very clear that was to be our first priority and I absolutely agree," Postl said. "We need the new program director in place so that they can be intimately involved in the implementation of the rest of the major recommendations."

Postl was flanked by the COO of Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre, John Horne and Hubert Gauthier, President of St. Boniface General Hospital.

Both said they are committed to working with the other implementation team members to ensure the process moves forward smoothly.

First on their agenda is to meet with staff who will be affected from both facilities.

"As Dr. Koshal states in his report, staff from both sites are of very high calibre," Gauthier said.

"They need to know that that has been recognized and is valued. They also need to know that the implementation team is committed to ensuring a smooth transition."

Horne agreed. "It's up to the implementation team to work out the details of how the one-program, two site model will be merged into a one-program, one-site model. But we can't do that unless we acknowledge that our greatest resource is our staff and unless we commit to keeping them informed and involved.".

Horne said the site meetings, which will include regional representation, will take place later today. Dr. Postl said the WRHA wants to take the opportunity to reassure all staff.

"The bottom line is at the end of this all, we should have, as Dr. Koshal says, an excellent cardiac program. That's good news for the staff and for the citizens of Manitoba," Postl said.
