Bell Canada donates $150,000 to Children's Hospital Foundation

The Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba and Bell Canada announced today Bell's $150,000 donation for the purchase of minimal access laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgical equipment at Children's Hospital in Winnipeg. This equipment will dramatically improve the quality of care for patients requiring surgery at Children's Hospital.

Through the Children's Hospital Foundation, Bell was made aware that leading laparoscopic surgeon Dr. Ioana Bratu did not have the specialized surgical equipment required to conduct minimal access surgery in small children at Children's Hospital.

"Thanks to Bell's generous donation children undergoing surgery for a number of procedures at Children's Hospital will experience less suffering, have shorter recovery times and a quicker return to their families and normal activities," said Meredith McArthur, President, Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. "It is because of the support of corporate partners like Bell that the Children's Hospital Foundation is able to ensure that children in Manitoba have access to the best medical care possible."

With support from the Children's Hospital Foundation, Dr. Ioana Bratu was able to acquire the necessary training equipment to improve and maintain laparoscopic basic skills for fellow pediatric surgeons, and residents at the Children's Hospital. There are now four pediatric general surgeons, as well as pediatric urologists, and pediatric gynecologists at the Children's Hospital who are enthusiastic in expanding the role of minimal access surgery in treating common childhood surgical problems. The next step was to acquire the necessary equipment to perform this type of surgery at Children's. Bell Canada quickly offered their support to Children's Hospital in Winnipeg enabling the purchase of this specialized surgical equipment.

Patients undergoing minimal access surgery have a significantly smaller scar, experience less pain, have shorter hospital stays, with faster recovery, and a quicker return to normal activities.

"Bell Canada's contribution has made a significant impact on the level of care that Dr. Bratu and her team will deliver to children in Manitoba," said Dr. Cheryl Greenberg, Head of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital. "By investing in this equipment, we are advancing child health care in Manitoba and training a new generation of surgeons in this leading-edge surgery."

"Bell is very pleased to fund leading-edge surgical equipment at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital and to know that a significant number of children and youth will now have access to this specialized surgery," says Renato Discenza, Senior Vice President, Bell Canada. "This donation reinforces Bell's deep commitment to building strong and healthy communities where we have presence and supporting Children's Hospitals across the country."

"Thanks to our Children's Hospital Foundation and the generosity of Bell, our young patients will have access to innovative, and safer surgical techniques", said Dr. Brock Wright, Chief Operating Officer of Health Sciences Centre and VP and Chief Medical Officer for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. "This new equipment, along with the expertise of our pediatric surgical team, will greatly improve the quality of care for children at our facility."

Children's Hospital is part of Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre and is the only pediatric care facility between Toronto and Calgary devoted expressly to the health care needs of children. Each year, more than 130,000 children visit the Children's Hospital in Winnipeg from throughout Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and Nunavut for care.
