World AIDS Day

December 1st will mark the 18th observance of World AIDS Day.

Commemorated around the globe, World AIDS Day celebrates progress made in the battle against the epidemic - and brings into focus remaining challenges at home and abroad.

In Canada, an estimated 56,000 persons were living with HIV infection at the end of 2002 and approximately one-third were unaware that they were infected (1), underscoring the importance of renewing efforts to increase and enhance prevention, testing, treatment, and care programs.

At home, the number of newly diagnosed cases of HIV infection has been steadily increasing and is impacted, in part, by the ongoing outbreak of infectious syphilis in Winnipeg - among men having sex with men, more than 40% of syphilis cases are co-infected with HIV.

In keeping with the theme of World AIDS Day 2005 "Stop AIDS. Keep The Promise," the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is working in partnership with Manitoba Health and the community to:

  1. Increase opportunities for and access to HIV testing;
  2. Provide ongoing training to health care providers who offer voluntary testing, counseling and referral services;
  3. Support and facilitate the development of province-wide public awareness campaigns to increase awareness of HIV among communities most vulnerable to HIV infection
