Update on SBGH Water Situation (4:30 p.m.)

Saint Boniface General Hospital will resume accepting patients tonight at midnight following the identification of the source and nature of the ‘contaminant' that was the source of the hospital's water problems.

Water from a 'chiller circuit' got into the domestic water supply through one of the hospital's air conditioning units. The problem with the unit has since been addressed. As well, the pipes in the area of the hospital where the smell was strongest have already been flushed and those in other areas are currently being flushed.

While the water has been deemed safe for washing, bathing and cleaning - out of an abundance of caution, patients, staff and visitors are being asked not to drink it until further notice. Officials will retest it once the flushing process is finished.

As of midnight, all services at SBGH will resume with the exception of hemodialysis patients. Officials are still working to confirm that it is safe to use the water for the dialysis process.

Patients who had procedures cancelled over the past two days will be rebooked as soon as possible. The public inquiry line (235-3477) will remain in operation over the weekend to answer any concerns.
