Winnipeg Health Region Contacting Patients About Hard Drive Theft

Theft Of Computer Processing Unit Poses Minimal Risk To Patient Information

The Winnipeg Health Region is contacting a total of 3,006 patients who had diagnostic imaging tests performed at Concordia Hospital.  Images or slides of those tests may have been saved onto a computer processing unit (CPU or hard drive) which was stolen.

The Health Region wants to assure all patients that it is believed the computer was stolen as a piece of equipment and not for the information contained.  As well, any layperson viewing the slides obtained on the hard drive would likely not be able to learn anything more from viewing the slides.

The Region has since performed an audit of all the computers in the Diagnostic Imaging Program to ensure they are password protected.

The theft from the hospital, which occurred May 14, 2007 was reported to Winnipeg Police who continue to investigate the incident. They have informed the Region that the possibility of someone using the name and birth date as the basis to form a false identity is remote. Further information on this issue can be obtained from the Winnipeg Police website under the heading of "Crime Prevention."

The Region and Concordia Hospital have apologized to the individuals affected by the theft and have set up a phone line (788-8004) operating out of the Provincial Call Centre for those with additional questions to leave a message.
