Pathology Review Update

The ongoing review of the work of a specific pathologist has now examined a total of 459 cases - 289 from the month of February reported last week and an additional 170 of the complex cases he handled over the past year. The 170 complex cases have been reviewed by two senior internal pathologists. Nine of these 170 complex cases remain under review, and all 170 will be additionally examined by the external pathologist. To date, the review has uncovered no case in which a patient required additional treatment as a result of an incorrect or incomplete report.

To date, the review process indicates that:

  • None of the 289 February cases reviewed so far had any clinical significance for the patients. Of the two cases reported last week as still under review, no clinical significance was found. The initial review of the remaining 25 of the February cases is expected next week.

  • Of the 170 complex cases reviewed so far, nine require further review by pathology. That review is ongoing.

  • The complete review of 700 cases was originally to include 350 from February 2008 and 350 of the most complex cases from the past year. As there are only 314 cases in total from February, an additional 36 complex cases over the last year will be completed (for a total of 386), to ensure the review includes a full 700 cases.

As of noon yesterday, the WRHA Inquiry Line had received a total of 317 calls. Of those calls:

  • Initial follow-up calls were completed to all callers, except for those who did not answer their phone after repeated calls and who do not have voicemail.

  • For 144 of these callers, the pathologist in question was not involved in their case. 124 of these callers have been contacted and provided with this information, and calls to the remaining 20 are underway.

  • The pathologist in question was involved in 28 of the 317 cases. Twenty-five of those 28 callers have been contacted and told that their slide has been reviewed and was originally read correctly. The three remaining slides are still under review.

  • Eight callers withdrew their request for a review after speaking with their physician.

  • Files on all remaining cases are being pulled for review.
