Pathology Review Update

The ongoing review of the work of a specific pathologist is on track to be substantively complete by next week.

The external reviewer has completed the review of the 822 pathology cases that comprised the scope of the review. Three of the 161 cases most recently reviewed were identified as requiring further review. These three cases, along with 28 previously identified cases are now undergoing comprehensive analysis and a final expert assessment of any potential clinical impact. As reported last week, the tumour boards are expected to complete their work within the next week.

To date, the review has uncovered no case in which a patient required additional treatment as a result of an incorrect or incomplete report.
To date, the review process indicates that:

  • The external reviewer has reviewed a total of 822 cases.

  • The external reviewer has completed the review of 314 cases from the month of February 2008. 313 cases have been determined to have no significant difference in pathology. One case requires further review.

  • The external reviewer has completed the review of 508 of the complex cases handled over the past year. Of these 508 complex cases, 478 have showed no significant differences in pathology. The remaining 30 cases require further review.

Calls to the WRHA Inquiry Line have slowed significantly. As of noon Tuesday, a total of 333 calls had been received. Of those calls:

  • For 246 of these callers, the pathologist in question was not involved in their case. All callers have been contacted and provided with this information.

  • The pathologist in question was involved in 60 of the 333 cases. For 43 of those cases the pathology was determined to have been reviewed and read correctly. All of these patients are being notified. The remaining 17 cases are still under review.

  • 12 callers withdrew their request for a review after speaking with their physician.

  • 15 callers could not be reached for follow up after repeated attempts.
