Premier Officially Opens New Concordia Hospital Emergency Department

Premier Gary Doer

Premier Gary Doer today officially opened the new $3.6-million expansion and renovation of the Concordia Hospital emergency department.

"The redeveloped Concordia emergency department means improved care for patients and their families, and leading-edge medical tools and facilities for our front-line health professionals," said Doer. "Our government has invested in health-care facilities across the province to continue to strengthen emergency care."

Doer joined Concordia Hospital Foundation chair David Olfert in unveiling a plaque commemorating the event and a second plaque honouring the work of the foundation and its volunteers.

Jan Currie, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority vice-president and chief nursing officer, said the expanded emergency department's additional 3,000 square feet will provide more privacy for patients and their families.

"It also includes dedicated space for a minor treatment area so that patients with relatively minor complaints can be seen, treated and discharged quickly, relieving pressuring on the entire department."

The expanded emergency department includes:

  • seven new treatment rooms;

  • private space for counselling;

  • a new triage desk;

  • a new entrance;

  • upgraded reception, security and volunteer desk;

  • new washrooms;

  • a new medication room; and

  • new staff offices.

Henry Tessmann, Concordia Hospital's chief operating officer, said the new space was designed with the needs of patients and staff in mind.

"Putting patients first - ensuring they have the private spaces when needed, that they can be effectively monitored as they wait to see a physician and that all their other needs are met - are important components of emergency departments," he said. "They will mean our dedicated team of health-care professionals will be better able to meet the varying needs of patients."

David Olfert, chair of the Concordia Hospital Foundation, praised the work of the hospital's many contributors and volunteers. "They are an important part of what we are and are one of our most direct connections to the community we serve."
