Update on Manitoba's New Women's Hospital

In November 2007, the Province of Manitoba announced that it would be building a new Women's Hospital for the Winnipeg health region at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. Public consultations were held across the city in January 2008, and feedback was solicited via telephone and email for people out of town or who were not able to attend in person. In addition, community health programs and community-based organizations coordinated discussion groups with their members, and HSC staff conducted telephone interviews with recently discharged patients, and focus groups with current patients and their family members.

The purpose of these discussions were to draw upon patients' and families' experiences to understand how the hospital environment could be designed to best meet their health care and support needs. The feedback received emphasized the need for a private, welcoming, homelike environment that provides adequate space for family, and supports a range of multidisciplinary and holistic services, including birthing options.

HSC and WRHA staff have also actively participated in the planning process, providing professional input to the development of the functional program, which was completed in late 2008. The functional planning process involves understanding the flow of care, and how best to design the space to enable staff to provide efficient and effective care to patients and their families, while creating an environment as envisioned by the public.

On September 9, 2008, the Province confirmed the site of the new Women's Hospital, which will be located at the site of the former Weston Bakery, across from Children's Hospital (Elgin Avenue and Sherbrook Street).

Currently, architects, together with ongoing input from users/health care professionals, are in the schematic design phase, which is heavily influenced by both the functional program and consultation results. A series of working groups will be held with staff and representatives of the neighbourhood.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2009.
