Speakers and Alumni from Around the World Celebrate 100th Anniversary of Children's Hospital

Children's Hospital – Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg will play host to renowned experts in Child Health as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations, at an academic conference and gala banquet, June 4-6, 2009, at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

The interdisciplinary conference, Child Health – The Next 100 Years: Changing Roles, Challenges and Technologies, will explore issues affecting pediatric care and research including: changes in global distribution of disease; Manitobans making a difference in world health; the ethics of recruitment; preventing diagnostic errors; Aboriginal health; environment, food and disease transmission; and changing technologies in care.

The conference features concurrent sessions as well as keynote and plenary addresses:

  • Dr. Alvin Zipursky, Toronto: Global Child Health and Pediatrics in Canada

  • Dr. Brian Postl, Winnipeg: Health Policy and Social Progress

  • Dr. Jerome Paulson, Washington, DC: Global Warming, Environmental Change and Pediatric Health

  • Dr. Stephen Scherer, Toronto: Pushing Scientific Boundaries

Social advocate, leadership specialist and bestselling author, Marc Kielburger, Free The Children, is the guest speaker at the gala banquet, June 6. Free The Children, the world's largest charity of children helping children through education, has built more than 500 schools around the world and has reached more than one million young people through outreach in North America. Their latest initiative is a joint project with Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network called O Ambassadors.

"We are thrilled to welcome clinical professionals and alumni from around the world to this international event," says Dr. Cheryl Rockman Greenberg, Medical Director, Child Health, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, Professor and Head, Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, University of Manitoba and Vice Chair of the Centenary Committee. "We hope that many former Manitobans will come home to help us celebrate the roots and future of healthcare for children."

Founded in 1909, HSC's Children's Hospital is the only tertiary care hospital for children in Winnipeg, serving residents of Manitoba, northwestern Ontario and Nunavut. The Honourable Theresa Oswald, Manitoba's Minister of Health, has officially declared June 1-7, 2009, Children's Hospital Week.
