National Aboriginal Day Celebrations

First proclaimed by the Governor General of Canada in 1996, June 21 is a day that presents all people of Canada an opportunity to express great pride for the rich diverse cultures of Aboriginal Peoples.

The Winnipeg health region celebrates National Aboriginal Day by learning more about First Nations, Métis and Inuit people and their contribution to our country. In recognition of this day, the health region hosts a variety of celebrations for health services staff, patients and clients at various health care sites. On Friday, June 19, two days prior to national celebrations, the range of activities includes guest speakers from the Aboriginal community, traditional dance, song and cultural displays.

The Winnipeg health region is also a proud sponsor of Sunday, June 21 celebrations at the Indian & Métis Friendship Centre, 45 Robinson Street, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Festivities include an honouring of fathers, dancing, drumming and singing, clowns and face painters, hot dogs, bannock samples, jerk chicken and refreshments.

Aboriginal Health

At multiple levels throughout the Winnipeg health region, efforts are made to develop an environment that meets the health care needs of First Nations, Métis and Inuit patients and their families in a culturally appropriate way. Direct health services in the areas of discharge coordination, interpreter services, advocacy and spiritual Elders are available to help meet the holistic cultural and spiritual healing needs of Aboriginal Peoples.

These services are coordinated through Aboriginal Health Programs, developed in collaboration with the Aboriginal community and health care teams of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, which functions as a resource to the Winnipeg health region in all areas of health services, cultural programs and human resource development.
