Concordia Hip & Knee Institute Officially Opens

Centre of Excellence Houses State-Of-The Art Research and Clinical Equipment

The Concordia Hip & Knee Institute, a one of a kind facility that will bring together the clinical surgical program, a pre-habillitation clinic while expanding its research and education capabilities was officially opened today.

"This impressive facility brings together clinical practices, research activities and partners them with the latest in high-tech equipment," Healthy Living Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross said. "This is a major advancement in terms of research and educational possibilities."

Dr. Brian Postl, President & CEO of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said the new Institute builds on Concordia Hospital's role in the area of orthopedics. "Concordia has long been recognized as a national centre of excellence for hip and knee replacements," Dr. Postl said. "Now it is expanding that role so that it will be a leader in the areas of research and education as well."

Dr. David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, said that the new Institute plays an important role in connecting research and education to patient care. "The University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine's partnership with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and Concordia Hospital has enabled the pursuit of important research, medical education and training by our academic clinicians while delivering service to patients in an area of growing need."

David Olfert, Chair of the Board of Directors said the project would not have been possible without the support and assistance of the community as well as the hospital's many volunteers and donors.

"We have a very strong link with our community and other partners," Mr. Olfert said. "Without them, the vision that was the Hip & Knee Institute would never have become a reality."

The Institute will also house:

  • A high-efficiency Clinical Surgical Practice Clinic with access to digital radiology and a Virtual Telehealth Clinic for long distance clinical consultations;

  • An expanded Implant Retrieval and Analysis Program.

  • A Digital Radiostereometric Analysis Suite and Scanning Electron Microscope that will allow researchers to expand their study and testing capabilities.

  • An integrated Educational Facility with a multifunction conference room and surgical simulator suite; and

  • Surgical Skills Lab where surgical residents and established surgeons can hone their surgical skills using a fully simulated surgical table.
