Free Press profiles Soapy

Soapy is making headlines.

The Winnipeg Health Region's beloved germ-fighter, aka Dr. John Embil, was profiled in today's Free Press by writer Bruce Owen.

The article, along with accompanying photographs, focuses on Soapy's ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the importance of hand washing to prevent the spread of infections.

Embil, who is Medical Director of Infection, Prevention and Control for the Winnipeg Health Region, created the Soapy character, complete with orange tights, several years ago as part of Bug Day, a health-care education event staged every year at Health Sciences Centre. The event features presentations and discussions on timely topics in infectious diseases, public health and infection prevention and control. An important component of Bug Day each year is the promotion of hand-hygiene awareness and safe health practices for the prevention of infection.

Recently, Embil decided to take the Soapy concept to a new level by creating a booklet entitled You'll Like Clean Hands. Drawing from the popular Dr. Seuss books, You'll Like Clean Hands is a light-hearted effort to raise awareness about hand hygiene in a way that is accessible to people of all ages.
