A few months ago, we here at the Winnipeg Health Region decided the time had come to freshen up the look and feel of our website.

Our objective was fairly straightforward. We wanted a site that was bolder, cleaner and easier to navigate. In other words, we wanted to enhance the reader experience.

The newly redesigned website you are visiting today does just that.

Frequent visitors to the site will notice several important improvements over the previous version. For example, there are now more stories on the home page, organized according to theme - Region News, Your Health and Innovation. The site also features a new colour palette, a slider to make better use of photos and illustrations, and a larger feature index. We’ve even added a health quiz just for fun.

All of these changes are part of our plan to meet a growing demand for online information about health issues and services. For example, our website recorded 4.8 million page views in 2010, compared with 3.2 million in 2009 and 1.6 million in 2008. This dramatic increase in traffic over three years shows that more people are coming to our website looking for information. Our job is to make sure we continue providing the information they are looking for.

Of course, while we have introduced a number of changes to our site, some things remain the same. Since its inception, the website has been used to provide information about the Region’s role in co-ordinating and delivering health-care services through its programs, sites and departments. That information has been carried over to the revised site.

Along with is new look, the website also has also been given a name and URL - The name reflects the wide range of health and health-service information found throughout this site. Of course, visitors typing the old URL - - will also be redirected to the site.

Website enhancements include:

  • Overall look: The overall look of the website has been changed to give the website a cleaner, fresher look and enhance navigation.
  • Sliding photo screen: The website now features a sliding photo screen at the top to highlight stories. This enables us to make better use of pictures and draw the readers attention to a variety of important stories at any given time.
  • Type size selector: Visitors now have the ability to increase the type size displaying content within the site, also providing improved readability to those with visual challenges.
  • New sections: The story content on the website will be located in one of three sections: Region News, Your Health and Innovation. This will enhance navigation and allow for future development of sections and section pages as we move forward.
  • New story page: The website’s story page has been redesigned to make content more appealing.

Going forward, we will be introducing more improvements to better serve the public, Meantime, if you have any questions or comments about the Region’s website, please contact Brian Cole at 204-926-8144 or e-mail
