The beginning of construction on the new Canad Inns Health Sciences Centre Hotel was celebrated today with an official sod-turning. This $40 million hotel will be located on the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) campus, adjacent to the new Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine research centre, along William Avenue.

Canad Inns President & CEO Leo Ledohowski was joined at the ground breaking by MLA Marilyn Brick, Councillor Scott Fielding, Winnipeg Health Region President & CEO Arlene Wilgosh, HSC COO Adam Topp, HSC VP & CAO Dana Erickson, and Project Manager Lea Ledohowski.

“At the Winnipeg Health Region, we are always looking for innovative opportunities to better meet the health care needs of Manitobans,” said Wilgosh. “The Canad Inns facility will support families staying close to hospitalized relatives, as well as provide first-class services to staff working on our campus, as well as the many visiting physicians, scientists and other health-care professionals.”

“HSC is pleased to welcome Canad Inns as a new partner on our campus,” said Topp. “Every day, people from across Manitoba, Nunavut, northwestern Ontario and eastern Saskatchewan come to HSC for specialist care, like neurosurgery, dialysis, pediatrics, or as a result of major trauma. Being able to offer close, comfortable accommodations enhances our vision to put patients first.”

“Canad Inns is pleased to have this exciting opportunity to add to our growing network of partnerships,” said Ledohowski. “Attaching a hotel to a major health facility I believe is the first of its kind in Canada. Our hope is that by locating this hotel at HSC, we will be able to make things a little easier for patients, by removing the worry of where their loved ones will stay while they are visiting.”

The facility will consist of a combination of 191guest rooms, executive rooms and suites, along with a variety of food and beverage concepts, state of the art meeting and conference space and other guest services. The Canad-Certified, four star designated hotel will offer the finest in guest services and incorporate the latest in energy efficient and environmentally friendly building practices.
