Dr. John Wade, Chair of the Winnipeg Health Region's Board of Directors, has received this year's Distinguished Service award from Manitoba Doctors.

The award was presented to Wade for a lifetime of work in the field of health care during a dinner and ceremony on Wednesday evening.

A long-time leader in Manitoba health care and a pioneer in the province's patient safety movement, Wade's contributions to the community are well known.

"It is rare for a physician, however celebrated, to have found so many ways to serve the profession and the community over the course of so many years, in the interest of Manitobans and Canadians," said a statement on the Doctors Manitoba website. "That is why awards and special honors have not been a rare occurrence in Dr. Wade's life and career.

It is the second major honour for Wade in less than a year. Just last fall he received the Judge J. M. George Memorial Award for 2010. The award is presented annually by the Regional Health Authorities of Manitoba to an individual who provides outstanding services in the health-care field in Manitoba, particularly those of a voluntary nature.

Wade's name has been synonymous with health care in Manitoba for nearly 30 years. In addition to chairing the Winnipeg Health Region Board, Wade as held a number of key leadership oppositions in health care, including Manitoba Deputy Minister of Health, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, and Executive Director of Manitoba Health's Policy and Planning Secretariat.

A graduate of the U of M medical school in 1960, Wade is also credited with having helped to lay the foundation for the Manitoba Patient Safety Institute, which established a research award in his name. He chaired the National Steering Committee on Patient Safety and presented its final report. An outcome of that initiative was the inception in 2003 of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, with Wade appointed as a member and Chair of its founding Board.

As the statement on the Manitoba Doctors website notes, "A long list of honorary lectures, visiting professorships and publications are a testament to his stature as lifelong scholar and educator.
