A dozen students from William Whyte School performed for staff at the Winnipeg Health Region today, capping off a week of celebrations to mark National Aboriginal Day.

One group of Grade 3 and 4 students demonstrated their proficiency at dancing by performing a square dance. Other students entertained the lunch-time crowd with performances of drumming and fiddling.

The celebration also featured a performance by Inuit throat singers Melinda Tautu and Zeann Manernaluk.

In addition, Stan Kipling, spiritual care provider with the Region's Aboriginal Health Programs, spoke about aboriginal spiritual ceremonies and items.

National Aboriginal Day celebrations were held at facilities throughout the Region this week to mark the contributions and cultures of First Nations, M├ętis and Inuit people.

The celebrations started on June 18 with a mini pow wow at Deer Lodge Centre and a smudge ceremony on June 20 at Riverview Health Centre. In addition, Michael Champagne, from Aboriginal Youth Opportunities, spoke about the importance of crafting positive futures and positive communities, during a special CEO Grand Rounds session on June 20 at Health Sciences Centre.
