The role of ACCESS centres

While the doors officially opened at ACCESS Winnipeg West today, new patients have already been signing up for primary care and seeking help from family services at the new building on the Grace Hospital campus.

Arlene Wilgosh, President and CEO of the Winnipeg Health Region, noted that 50 new patients were taken in just last week at the new ACCESS centre, which houses a wide range of health and social services under one roof.

"These were people who didn't have a family doctor or form of primary care, so we're thrilled that while the building has just opened, that the community has been waiting for this day as much as we have," she said. "Four years ago, this building was just a vision. The staff moved in just yesterday, so it's wonderful to have the primary care clinic already working."

Manitoba Health minister Erin Selby said having more access to primary care means people will have an alternative to seeking care at the Grace Hospital emergency department.

"ACCESS Centres are one-stop shops for families and provide more coordinated, accessible services," said Selby. "Along with this new ACCESS centre, we are making other new investments built around the needs of families and seniors living in west Winnipeg, including a new emergency department and MRI at the Grace Hospital and a QuickCare clinic to provide an alternative to emergency care."

West Winnipeg will also see a smoother transition between hospital and community health services, said Wilgosh, as a new administrative structure will oversee both areas.

"For example, hospital staff and home care staff will work together for the patient's needs in this area," she said. "It's really going to work for the patients because it breaks down the barriers. There will be a much smoother transition between services."

ACCESS Winnipeg West includes a new primary care clinic and is currently connecting hundreds of new patients with a family care provider.  In addition to physicians, nurse practitioners and primary care nurses, other services available include counselling, psychology, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physiotherapy and psychiatry along with lab and dietary services.

The ACCESS Centre also includes new early learning and child care services in a new 8,400 sq. ft. child-care centre, with 80 spaces scheduled to open in the coming months.

ACCESS Winnipeg West is the latest of these centres to open, joining ACCESS centres in Downtown, NorWest, River East and Transcona. Two more are in development for St. Boniface and south Winnipeg.
