ACCESS Winnipeg West damage update

Repairs underway after water damage early in January

ACCESS Winnipeg West will remain closed for three to five months for repairs following water damage in early January.

The ACCESS centre, located at 280 Booth Dr. adjacent to the Grace Hospital, was flooded on Jan. 4 when four water pipes froze on the top floor of the three-story building, causing them to burst and flood the floors beneath.

Investigation into the cause showed that a maintenance hatch on the third floor had become ajar, allowing cold winter air into the surrounding area, freezing the pipes and causing them to burst.  Water flooded the area and the floors beneath for several hours. Motion sensors detected the water, alerting security, who notified the building engineers to turn off the water.

Damage cost is currently estimated to at $5 million. Damage to the facility has primarily affected interior walls and flooring. The majority of furnishings and electronics were preserved due to their elevation. Restoration work is underway to drywall, flooring, lighting fixtures, and ceiling tile replacement throughout the centre.

The building was closed at the time, and there were no staff or patients present.

Patients and clients are being seen at the Grace Hospital and other community health sites. Approximately 100 to 125 clients normally visit the centre daily for scheduled appointments.

ACCESS Winnipeg West has approximately 170 staff, providing services at the primary care clinic, and in speech language pathology, audiology, community mental health, home care and Family Services. The building also houses a daycare.

This was one of two ACCESS centres within the Winnipeg Health Region to incur water damage resulting from frozen pipes in January. There are five ACCESS centres located across Winnipeg.  Two new ACCESS centres are currently under construction in Fort Gary and St. Boniface.
