2016 WRHA annual report

Winnipeg Regional Health Authority
Published Tuesday, October 25, 2016

Approximately 100 people attended the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority’s 2015 Annual General Meeting on October 25th at the Canad Inns Destination Centre Health Sciences Centre.

Reflecting on his first year as WRHA President and CEO, Milton Sussman spoke to the WRHA’s success as a people-focused health-care provider.

“It truly is our people – our staff, our patients and their families – who give meaning to the WRHA and the important work we do,” Sussman said, adding that he’s seena consistency in the desire of all our staff to do their best work and provide the best care to their patients.”

Sussman noted a number of success stories for the WRHA over the past year, including:

  • new ACCESS centres in Fort Garry and St. Boniface;
  • a newly-renovated Cardiac Care unit at St. Boniface Hospital;
  • work to improve the ability of paramedics to transfer patients to the emergency department in a shorter time; and
  • the opening of the new Specialized Services for Children and Youth facility to provide parents of children with special needs the supports and services they need under one roof.

While expressing pride in those accomplishments, Sussman said that many challenges remain. Those challenges include “the need for the WRHA to relentlessly pursue ongoing, continuous, daily improvement” and “to be accountable and transparent in our work.”

“We can and we must do better,” he said. “That improvement must happen at every level, in every site and in every program on a daily basis.”

To meet those challenges, Sussman said the WRHA must work within an environment where innovation, collaboration and accountability are encouraged and supported.

“As a region, we are focusing on meaningful, measurable goals and targets for success in all areas of our work,” he said. “We will be holding ourselves accountable to them and will reporting publicly every quarter on how we’re doing.”
