Province Announces New Clinic for Northwest Winnipeg

Primary-care Team in Weston-Brooklands Part of Province's Plan To Ensure Every Manitoban Has Access to a Family Doctor by 2015: Oswald

A new clinic located at Bluebird Lodge seniors' complex will provide a wide range of health and social services to residents of the Weston-Brooklands area, Health Minister Theresa Oswald announced today.

"Manitobans want to know they can access timely care when they or their loved ones are sick," said Oswald. "As part of our plan to provide every Manitoban access to a family doctor, the Bluebird Clinic will provide stable and convenient primary care to an area of Winnipeg that has been underserved in the past."

Bluebird Clinic will be a satellite health-care centre of the Nor'west Co-op Community Health Centre and will provide a primary-care team that will include a doctor and nurse practitioners, offering diagnosis, treatment, followup, referral, consultation, counselling and education. Other long-term supports will provide diabetes and chronic-disease case management, seniors' health and wellness programs that include fall prevention and vision screening, and reproductive health-care services. As a satellite of Nor'west Co-op Community Health Centre, the clinic will provide residents access to a broader range of health and social services that will soon be integrated under one roof at ACCESS Nor'West.

"This satellite centre provides a viable, cost-effective solution to meet the needs of a community that includes newcomers, seniors and single-parent families," Winnipeg Regional Health Authority president and CEO Arlene Wilgosh said. "A community-based centre can adapt to the specific needs of the neighbourhood - in this case, services targeted specifically to seniors, young mothers and those living with chronic conditions such as diabetes."

"The ability to expand our reach and restore health-care team services in Weston-Brooklands is great news," said Ivan Sabesky, Nor'West Co-op Community Health Centre chair. "The Bluebird Clinic will be welcomed by the neighbourhood and broader community."

"Our government is responding to the needs of this community by bringing stable and accessible health care to residents of Weston-Brooklands," said Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Flor Marcelino. "I am pleased the Bluebird Clinic will be up and running within a matter of months and I wish to thank our many community partners as we work together to bring more services to this area."

Oswald noted the professional team approach will have a positive effect on individuals as well as significant benefits for the community as a whole. Residents of Bluebird Lodge will be consulted on final design of the clinic which is expected to open in mid-2011.
