Construction starts on ACCESS Nor'West at 785 Keewatin

Winnipeg, MB – Premier Greg Selinger and Health Minister Theresa Oswald marked the official start of construction of a new $4.2 million ACCESS centre located at the corner of Keewatin Street and Burrows Avenue.

"This facility is another way that we are working to ensure every Manitoban who wants a family doctor can have access to one,” Selinger said. "ACCESS Nor’West will increase the number of physicians available and bring together an array of health and social services, creating easier access for people of northwest Winnipeg who need these supports.”

The new one-storey building will house the Nor'West Co-op Community Health Centre and offer increased access to doctors, and access to nurse practitioners, primary care nurses, midwives, health educators, dietitians and counsellors. Complementing the health services will be social services such as family violence counselling, immigrant women's counselling, child day care, children's special services, career counselling, and vocational rehabilitation for people with disabilities, employment and income assistance, seniors' health and supported living.

“ACCESS centres weave a tighter safety net for people with complex needs,” Arlene Wilgosh President and CEO of the Winnipeg Health Region said, "Those individuals who require multiple health and social services will have a one-stop shop, simplifying their connections to the right people and the right information.”

The Inkster and Gilbert Park neighbourhoods have the highest proportion of children and youth age 19 and under in the Winnipeg health region, along with the third highest proportion of single-parent families, and the fourth highest aboriginal population.

Each ACCESS Center is designed to meet the unique needs of the area it serves.

“Nor’West ACCESS centre is designed with the needs of area residents in mind, including a satellite location in Weston/ Brooklands area currently under development – the Bluebird Clinic,” Carmen Hemmersbach, Community Area Director with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said.

Development of a satellite health-care centre of the Nor’West Co-op Community Health Centre, Bluebird Clinic, has begun at Bluebird Lodge seniors' complex. Bluebird Clinic will provide a wide range of health and social services to residents of the Weston-Brooklands area. When complete, it will include a primary-care team of a doctor and nurse practitioners, offering diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, referral, consultation, counselling and education. Other long-term supports will provide diabetes and chronic disease
case management, seniors' health and wellness programs that include fall
prevention and vision screening, and reproductive health-care services.

Access Nor’West will be the fourth ACCESS Centre developed in Winnipeg. Current ACCESS Centres include: ACCESS River East, ACCESS Transcona, and ACCESS Downtown. Construction on Winnipeg’s fifth centre, ACCESS St. James, is expected to start by this summer.
