Next phase of Women's Hospital construction

Two construction cranes to tower over site of $235 M building before year’s end

The latest phase of construction of the new Women’s Hospital has started. Work crews are already preparing to install piles, moving in the required heavy equipment and hooking up the necessary power and water to the construction trailers. Two tower cranes will be erected next month with work on the foundation slab for the 300,000 square foot building starting early next year.

EllisDon, one of North America’s largest developers of new hospitals and health-care facilities, was awarded the contract to complete the construction.

"Manitoba women told us they wanted a modern hospital with larger private rooms, and we listened with a modern, state-of-the-art facility to meet the needs of women and newborns for years to come – a facility that has already won a national award,” Health Minister Theresa Oswald said.

“It is exciting to see the next phase of construction get underway to make this dream a reality.”

Arlene Wilgosh, President & CEO of the Winnipeg Health Region thanked the area residents for their patience during the ongoing construction. “They have been very understanding throughout numerous traffic diversions, the pounding of piles and the dust that comes with this type of work.” Officials with Health Sciences Centre have and will continue to work to keep the residents informed as work progresses and to limit the amount of inconvenience.

Dana Erickson, HSC’s Chief Operating Officer said staff are excited as they watch the new building take shape. “They are looking forward to the day when we are moved in and they will be able to care for their patients in this state-of-the-art facility.”

Construction of the building is expected to be completed in the summer of 2015.
