HSC Children's patients return to hospital

Ongoing cleanup underway at Children’s Hospital

As of noon today, all inpatients displaced from Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg’s Children’s Hospital have returned to their units. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service reviewed the air quality and safety of Children’s Hospital once the blaze was extinguished this morning and patients returned after a great cleaning effort by Housekeeping Services.

The 92 inpatients and 10 patients in Children’s Emergency were successfully relocated within HSC when a fire broke out in the adjacent Diagnostic Imaging building construction site shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The cause of the blaze and extent of damage has yet to be determined. Winnipeg Police Service and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service are investigating the cause of the fire. HSC and contractors are awaiting approval from the Office of the Fire Commissioner to gain safe access to the site. (For information related to the fire, damage and investigation please contact City of Winnipeg Communications at 204.986.6222.)

Some children’s elective (scheduled, non-urgent) surgeries were postponed. All are currently being rescheduled.

Staff on-site and that came in and remained on-scene through the night to deal with the incident were invaluable to the quick evacuation of the units and timely return for patients once the area was deemed safe.

Many of them have left the premises and are not available to comment at this time.

Further updates will be provided tomorrow as information becomes available.
