WRHA Flu Clinics Open Tuesday

Annual flu vaccines available near you starting October 22

Get your flu shots here! Flu clinics will be open Tuesday, October 22 to Saturday, October 26 offering free flu vaccinations to the public.

“It’s important to get the flu shot every year,” Health Minister, Erin Selby said. “Each flu season is unique and getting the free shot can help keep your family and those you care about healthy this winter.”

It is especially important for key target groups to be immunized. Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization identifies care providers, the very young and very old, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions along with people with morbid obesity, Aboriginal people and children two to four years old. These groups are most likely to have serious consequences or pass them on to other vulnerable people.

Those complications can include pneumonia which kills 4,000 to 8,000 people, mostly seniors, each year in Canada.

WRHA President and CEO, Arlene Wilgosh warned the flu virus can stay alive on hard surfaces, such as a counter top or door knob, for up to 48 hours. “Getting the vaccine will not only help protect you against the flu but also help keep it from spreading to others.”

“We want people to protect themselves and others this season by getting the flu vaccine, washing their hands regularly and avoiding contact with others if they are sick,” WRHA Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Fatoye said.

Clinics will open at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22. Clinic locations and hours are available online or by calling 204-956-SHOT.
