Boil water advisory

Effective immediately, the WRHA is issuing a Boil Water Advisory for the area of the City of Winnipeg that lies east of the Red River. The BWA is being issued as a precautionary measure as a result of two clusters of positive results involving the presence of E. coli, received earlier today.

There has been no source of contamination identified to date; however, public health is proceeding according to provincial and national guidelines. These guidelines specify to issue the advisory as a precautionary measure, while investigating the possible causes.

Further information should be available tomorrow, and we will reassess the risk at that time.

Advisory Area:
All City of Winnipeg water system users east of the Red River.

All residents within the specified area should be advised that until further notice, all water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute before it is used for:

  • Drinking and ice making
  • Beverage preparation, such as infant formula
  • Preparing food
  • Brushing teeth

It is not necessary to boil tap water used for other household purposes, such as laundry or washing dishes.  Adults and older children that are able to avoid swallowing the water can wash, bathe, or shower. Young children should be sponge bathed. If boiling is not feasible, an alternate and safe supply of water should be used; i.e. bottled water.
