Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Celebrates Nurses

National Nursing Week May 9-15, 2016

Nursing week is an extraordinary opportunity to acknowledge the vital contribution of more than 13,700 nurses in Manitoba and the more than 408,000 nurses in Canada.

Nurses play not one, but many roles in our healthcare system. Every day and at every hour they provide care and comfort in acute care, community health, home care and long-term care environments. At the same time, they blaze new trails in the profession, designing new processes and analytic tools while pushing the boundaries to create new thinking around care for all in the 21st century.

"I'm continually moved and inspired by the power and passion of nurses," says Lori Lamont, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. "I'm proud of their commitment to people and their communities, and to the evolution of healthcare."

During National Nursing Week, May 9-15, we celebrate nurses and their extraordinary service to Manitobans. Their commitment, creativity and compassion are hallmarks of care, both here at home and throughout the world. While we recognize their invaluable impact in a variety of ways this week, few could be more powerful than for each of us to take a moment to personally thank a nurse for the effect they have and the difference they make, every day.

A career in nursing is comprised of many moments, challenging and rewarding, that happen quietly and without fanfare. They happen when a patient comes out of surgery, or when a long-term care resident sits on a bed for the first time in a new, unfamiliar place. They happen when someone gets news that changes everything. They happen all the time, and this year we asked nurses across the WRHA to tell us one of their nursing moments. They responded - as they always do - and we're grateful once again.
