Critical Care Program

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Critical Care Program services 8 critical care units at 6 Winnipeg hospitals. The program enjoys a close affiliation with the University of Manitoba’s teaching programs in Nursing, Medicine and a variety of other professional disciplines.

Health Sciences Centre also has a unique role in the provision of health care to the aboriginal population of Manitoba and serves as the Provincial Trauma, Neurosciences and Burn Centre.

Each unit consists of a multidisciplinary collaborative team of nurses, doctors, pharmacists, respiratory therapist, dieticians, physiotherapists and support staff with critical care expertise providing 24-hour care for the patients in Adult Critical Care.

We have five Intensive Care Units within two tertiary hospitals (Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface Hospital) and four ICUs in four community hospitals (Concordia Hospital, Grace Hospital, Seven Oaks Hospital, Victoria Hospital). There are separate Medical and Surgical/Trauma ICUs at Health Sciences Centre; St. Boniface Hospital has a mixed Medical-Surgical ICU. The Intensive Care Units within the city possess advanced support capability including invasive mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy and Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). Approximately 5000 patients are admitted to our ICUs annually.
