Message to Home Care clients and families

By Jane Curtis, Interim President & CEO
Winnipeg Regional Health Authority

As you are likely aware, this spring, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) transitioned home care scheduling to a centralized office and to 24 hours, seven (7) days per week service.

Centralized scheduling was implemented with the goal of maintaining and improving the services you depend on. Bringing scheduling staff together was done to ensure standard processes are being followed, resources are more consistently coordinated, and appropriate supports are in place for those teams striving for excellence in serving you. This has not happened, and we apologize to those of you who have experienced impacts to your home care services because of this change.

Please be assured that we are doing everything necessary to address the challenges as a result of the implementation to ensure that the home care program is working for clients and their families as well as staff. Our priority is to provide safe, high-quality home care to those who need it.

Among a number of steps we have taken to address concerns that we have heard are:

  • We have onboarded 32 new Scheduling Clerks and have brought in additional staff and management resources from across the region.
  • We are reviewing and updating processes and procedures that are not working for staff and clients.
  • We have been working to ensure visits are covered using overtime and agency staff where required, while actively engaging with government and unions to immediately hire more home care nurses and support workers, and to identify additional staffing needs and solutions.

If you need to cancel a scheduled home care visit for you or your loved one, you can call the Client Cancellation Line any time at 204-788-8333.

We appreciate your patience and understanding and we are confident that we will address the challenges you and your care workers have been experiencing because of the centralization changes, and that high quality and dependable home care services will be available to you and your families very soon.

If you have concerns about your or your loved one's home care services, please contact your case coordinator directly. Outside of regular business hours, you can also contact the After-Hours client line at 204-788-8331.

Sincerely,

Jane Curtis
