The Operational Stress Injury Clinic is a specialized outpatient program that provides services specifically to veterans of the Canadian Forces, current Forces members, eligible members of the RCMP, as well as to the family members of these individuals. The program focuses on helping improve the quality of life of their clients through a better understanding of the impact of severe stress.

The clinic is located at Deer Lodge Centre, due to its historic and ongoing ties to veterans. It is fully funded by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) and is one of a number of similar clinics funded by VAC across Canada. The clinic provides clients access to an interdisciplinary health-care team including two Occupational Therapists and a Physiotherapist.

The Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapist focus on assisting clients via individual sessions and group programs to engage in meaningful activities and improve self-management skills such as time management, emotion regulation, sensory coping strategies, instrumental activities of daily living and coping with chronic pain. They address Health living skills such as sleep, movement, strengthening and flexibility, mindfulness and relaxation skills as well as transitional services as clients transition out of the clinic. Each treatment program is individualized and strategies for treatment modalities are based on the specific goals and needs of each client. Some of the treatment strategies include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (cognitive skills and behavioural activation), Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, motivational interviewing and sensory processing.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, the therapists had to alter the methods by which they delivered treatment and programs. Continuing to provide service was essential and the therapists quickly adapted to the situation and developed an innovative virtual program model which continued to reach out to their clients while ensuring they remained safe at home. The therapists modified their approach and began individual treatment sessions over the telephone as well as virtually and also began virtual group sessions. The pandemic created a need to develop a new way to practice and the therapists did not let it disrupt the extraordinary care they provide to their clients. They have adapted and overcome many challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic and have incorporated new methods of treatment that can continue into the future. Their ability to adapt under extreme circumstances and the ongoing dedication they have for improving the quality of life of their clients deserves recognition and congratulations.
