Anesthesia

The WRHA Anesthesia Program provides 24 hours per day, 7 days per week services at six acute care hospitals, the Misericordia Health Centre and the Pan Am Clinic. These services are essential to the surgical program for all of the perioperative components.

The Anesthesia program is responsible for pre and post-operative patient assessment, intra-operative patient management for all surgeries that may involve general anesthesia, and anesthetic management for obstetrical patients. The Anesthesia Program also provides acute pain management for all inpatient and day surgical patients. The range of health services provided by the Anesthesia Program is available to patients from Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Additionally the Anesthesia program is leading the charge with its work in the Chronic Pain Management Clinic at the Health Sciences Centre. Other notable services include a blood alternatives program, which decreases the chances of needing blood transfusions during and operation and the Malignant Hyperthermia & Cholinerase Deficiency assessment clinic (Provincial Program run out of Children's Hospital-HSC), and regional anesthesia.

The members of the health care team within the Anesthesia Program generally include physicians, registered nurses, and technicians. Many Winnipeg Anesthesiologists have been recognized nationally for their work.
