Residency in Medical Genetics
The Manitoba program in Genetics and Metabolism offers a five year residency in Medical Genetics through the Department of Post-Graduate Education in the Max Rady Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.
Residents complete two years of basic clinical training with the emphasis on Paediatrics and Internal Medicine. During the first two years, residents also gain experience in counselling and maternal-fetal medicine in addition to some clinical genetics exposure.
During the final three years, residents gain extensive experience in all aspects of medical genetics including cancer genetics, metabolic diseases, prenatal diagnosis and general genetics. Residents also rotate through the cytogenetics, molecular and metabolic laboratories and are expected to conduct a research project. At the end of their residency, residents take their fellowship examinations through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
