Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program

The WRHA Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program was established in April 2012 at the Victoria Hospital (Centre for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, CMBS). The program is open to adults who live in Manitoba. Our team is made up of surgeons, nurses, dietitians, psychologists and exercise specialists who work very closely with patients who are accepted into the program.

Bariatric (or weight-loss) surgery is a tool to help you lose weight and improve health; it is not an instant fix. You will still need to eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise. This will help you reach your goals and avoid regaining weight in the future. It is very important to remain focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Success is an ongoing effort and commitment.

At CMBS, each patient is individually evaluated. Not everyone participating in the clinic is an appropriate candidate for bariatric surgery. It takes several appointments and considerable time to determine this. Patients must agree to attend all pre-op visits and tests and follow a follow-up program after surgery for 5 years.
