Recommendations to prepare yourself for Bariatric Surgery

  • IDENTIFY A SUPPORT PERSON
    • Identify a person who can support you throughout this process and will help you to achieve your goals.
  • START TRACKING YOUR FOOD INTAKE
    • Use a pen and paper or an app such as MyFitnessPal to record your food.
  • DRINK AT LEAST 6-8 CUPS OF WATER PER DAY
    • Start sipping water throughout the day instead of gulping large amounts all at once.
    • Stop drinking carbonated beverages.
  • EAT AT LEAST 3 MEALS PER DAY, DO NOT SKIP MEALS
    • Aim to have protein at all meals and most snacks.
      • If tracking your protein intake, see what your current protein intake is and start working towards the goal of 60-80g of protein each day
    • Chew your food 15-20 times each bite.
    • After surgery chewing well prevents indigestion, upset stomach and reduces the risk of potential blockages.
  • START TRACKING YOUR ACTIVITY
    • Start some form of aerobic exercise (walk, bike, swimming, etc.) and make it a part of your daily routine.
    • Aim for bouts of 10 minutes or more with a goal of 150 mins per week.
    • Consider tracking your steps. See what your baseline is and then slowly start increasing your daily steps. Aim for no less than 5000 steps per day and work up to 7500-10,000 steps per day.
  • NO SMOKING OR INHALANTS
    • You MUST remain smoke free. This includes ALL inhalants including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vaporizers or vapes, cannabis, and all nicotine products. The occasional drag or puff is considered smoking.
    • It's important to note that if you do use cannabis products, that you DO NOT use any inhaled products.
    • Smoking after surgery can lead to many possible complications.
  • MEDICATIONS
    • Long acting medications for depression or anxiety may not be absorbed as well after surgery, speak with your family doctor about changing these medications.
    • Avoid all anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) (i.e. Advil, Aleve, Naproxen).
    • Discuss alternatives for pain control with your family doctor or pharmacist.
  • CRAVING CHANGE CLASSES (optional)
  • COMPLETE BLOODWORK
    • Bloodwork MUST becompleted prior to your first appointment with the team. Contact your family doctor to see if bloodwork has been sent to the CMBS clinic
  • YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH US PLEASE BRING:
    • At least 2 weeks of food tracking sheets or your MyFitnessPal username and password.
    • All activity tracking sheets
    • Current medications/supplements you are taking
