Surveillance
Surveillance is the ongoing collection, collation and analysis of data and the timely communication of this information so that action can be taken.
Major initiatives include:
- Ongoing epidemiological support for outbreak investigations;
- Developing a chronic disease surveillance strategy;
- Population-based surveillance reports;
- Capacity building and development of team members;
- Teaching and training of graduate students, medical residents and field epidemiologist training recruits from the Canadian Field Epidemiology Program (Public Health Agency of Canada); and
- Applied public health research.

Manitoba Collaborative Data Portal (MBCDP)
The Manitoba Collaborative Data Portal (MBCDP) has now been launched and is ready for use. As a resource that is freely available to the public, the MBCDP aims to provide a knowledge base to promote evidence informed community discussion, planning and action in Manitoba around the issues of health equity, social justice, public accountability, and environmental sustainability.
The MBCDP contains web-based mapping tools that can be used to access data from the 2016 Census for small geographic areas including detailed population breakdowns, income estimates, housing conditions, and a variety of indicators related to ethnicity and immigration. The MBCDP also contains a number of basic health indicators for Manitoba including life expectancy, diabetes prevalence, and premature mortality, as well as links to a wide range of local and national data sources relevant to public and population health programs.
Population Health Surveillance supported the development of the MBCDP in collaboration with the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg and a number of other key partners including PEG Winnipeg (United Way of Winnipeg), the Manitoba Center for Health Policy (University of Manitoba), and the Institute of Urban Studies (University of Winnipeg).

The epidemiology of Communicable Diseases in the Winnipeg Health Region, 2014-2019
The epidemiology of communicable diseases in the Winnipeg Health Region 2014-2019 provides a regional surveillance summary of select infections/diseases listed as reportable under The Manitoba Public Health Act (with the exception of influenza, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections as they are reported elsewhere).
The report is divided into five broad disease categories (i) Enteric, food, and waterborne diseases (ii) Respiratory and direct contact diseases (iii) Vaccine preventable diseases and (iv) Vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. Within each section, diseases are presented separately with the type of analysis based on the number of cases reported in 2019. As this is a technical surveillance report, results are limited to statistical tabulations by age, sex, and geographical data.
